What Is Legacy?


As a single, queer person, I often wonder about legacy: How will I be remembered? Who will be there to remember me after I’ve gone?


That’s why I’m passionate about supporting the work of Lambda Archives of San Diego. Their mission is to collect, preserve, and share the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in San Diego, Northern Baja California, and the Imperial County region. By safeguarding our shared stories, Lambda ensures that future generations can learn from and celebrate the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ lives in our community.


This Giving Tuesday, I’m especially inspired by the groundbreaking project of Dr. T.J. Tallie, Lambda’s Community Historian in Residence. Dr. Tallie is leading a vital research initiative, “Whose World, Whose Home? Black Queer Life in San Diego, 1988-2002.” This project delves into the lived experiences of Black queer San Diegans during a transformative period in our history.


Through archival materials such as personal papers, Black queer newspaper editorials, and firsthand accounts, Dr. Tallie brings to light how these trailblazers navigated and shaped a rapidly changing city. Their work is informed by deep academic research and a commitment to centering voices that have long been overlooked.
